Antique Cast Iron House of Seven Gables Doorstop

Antique Cast Iron House of Seven Gables Doorstop. Rather rare & desirable doorstop designed by Sarah Symonds. Shown in “The Doorstop Book” By John & Nancy Smith on page 235. The House of the Seven Gables is a colonial mansion in Salem, Massachusetts. The House was built in 1668 by Captain John Turner. The mansion was made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s book, “The House of Seven Gables” written in 1850. The Book’s Setting was inspired by Hawthorne’s cousin Susanna Ingersoll who once owned the house and by Hawthorne’s other ancestors who had played a role in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. Sarah Symonds once had a gift shop across from the House of Seven Gables. This Doorstop was made to commemorate its restoration in 1909. Very good to excellent condition with minor paint loss. All original, has not been re-touched. Measures 8 1/2 inches long, 4 3/4 inches tall and weighs 6.2 lbs. I believe this is Easter Point Light Station. Signed & numbered: Lighthouse of Gloucester Mass. 8, Copyrighted 1925, by A. Greenblatt Studios, Boston, Mass. An eye appealing doorstop. Very RARE & DESIRABLE. 11 1/2″ tall X 9″ wide X 2 1/2 deep. 21.06 LOOKING FOR UNUSUAL, THOUGHTFUL & SPECIAL GIFTS? VISIT OUR STORE FOR MORE UNIQUE ANTIQUES, NAUTICAL ITEMS & DOORSTOPS! Eastern Point Light Station was established in 1832. Following the arrival of the railroad in Gloucester in 1847 the fishing business exploded and the importance of Eastern Point Light increased. A new light tower replaced the poorly constructed original tower in 1848. Homer’s works depicting the scenery and everyday life of this maritime community are among his most famous. The third and present tower was built in 1890 on the masonry foundation of the 1832 tower. The 36-foot tall, conical brick tower is painted white. An enclosed passageway and covered walkway connect the tower to the two-story double keepers’ quarters, which was built in 1879. Eastern Point Light Station consists of the 1890 tower, keepers’ quarters, walkway, oil house and bell tower.
