This is an original cast iron Pointer dog doorstop manufactured by the Hubley Manufacturing Company in Lancaster Pennsylvania USA. The piece has retained its original hand painted finish which shows wear and knicks and chips. It is in excellent condition with the appropriate patina for its age. DATE OF MANUFACTURE: 1910 -1940. MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES: Cast Iron, hand painted. CONDITION: Very good-Wear consistent with age and use. HISTORY: The Hubley Manufacturing Co. Was incorporated in 1894 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania by John Hubley and produced hand painted cast-iron toys and household objects such as doorstops, bookends and bottle openers with themes that ranged from different breeds of dogs, to horses and cars. In the casting process, metalworkers would carve out a wooden form or hammer the design out in metal. The form was then pressed into finely compacted sand, making an impression, and the cast iron was heated to 3000 degrees which was then poured into the sand mold. N the decorating department, painters applied a base coat of white, cream or black to the piece and colorists used a variety of hues to achieve defining features. 5 3/8″ from tip of his nose to the tip of the tail, 8″ inches tall and 3 3/8 at the widest part of his head. This is a proud Hubley Thoroughbred Cast Iron Doorstop in blood bay color with black forelock, mane, and tail. He has a nice blaze face and 2 whites fetlocks at the front. The face and mane show wonderful detail. This doorstop is in very good, solid condition. The original flathead screws hold tightly at the neck and flank. The neck screw is still covered by the original paint. The screw at the flank is partially revealed. There are no breaks and no cracks. There is some paint wear including points at the ears, nose and elsewhere as is expected on a piece of this age. He has a beautiful vintage look. Our horse stands about 10 1/2 inches tall and 12 inches long. He weighs about 6 1/2 pounds. Thank you for shopping with us. We will do what we can to make everything right!

You are looking at a RARE vintage cast iron Boston Terrier doorstop. The brown paint is what I would say is generally what you see from a doorstop this old with chips and missing paint. But no cracks, and no signs of repair. Most of this style doorstops are colored black. As this one is a rarer brown. The door stop is two pieces of cast iron metal with the original straight head screw. It’s in the shape of a Boston Terrier with its head turned to the LEFT. Which in itself is a rarity. As 97% of these same style doorstops are the head turned to the right. The piece measures 9 3/4 inches tall by 9 3/4 inches long. It’s almost 9 lbs. Original paint, not a reproduction, touched up or altered in anyway. Most people are listing these left facing stops as a Hubley. With extensive research on this item I have found out that Hubley had never made a left facing bulldog doorstop. This Information came directly from Hubley’s identification guide book. Hubley never cast a identification mark or number on any of these dog stops as it was said that it would take away from the look of the figure. Not much more to say about this rarer piece except it would look great in your collection as something different and unique.
