Rare Antique Art Deco Cast Iron HL Judd Doorstop Dapper Dan Man w Cane Old Paint
Rare Antique Art Deco Cast Iron HL Judd Doorstop Dapper Dan Man with Cane Old Original Paint. Measures 7 1/4 tall. Wedge type doorstop no longer has the wood insert but cast iron is complete with no cracks or chips and nothing repainted. It is Judd number 1256 and is correctly numbered on the back. One of the most desirable Art Deco era doorstops with great character. The same doorstop can be found on page 208 of The Doorstop Encyclopedia by Smith as shown in our last photo – it is a shot of the original 1939 Hubley catalog. Guaranteed a genuine older vintage original with old paint. In New Britain, Connecticut. The firm changed hands among family members and company names for a hundred years as it evolved into the J. In 1864, Albert, Edward and Hubert Judd moved the company to New Haven, Connecticut, then to its permanent location in Wallingford, Connecticut. A few years later, Hubert Judd struck out on his own to start the H. Judd Company in Brooklyn, NY. Judd took control of the Wallingford plant. In the early 1910s, they began to produce a decorative art metal line of fine-quality sand castings in iron, brass and bronze. Among these items were bookends and book racks, which were produced between 1910 and the late 1930s. Judd identified their bookends with a 9000 series stock numberand their doorstops with a 1000 series number. The prefix 0 was used in front of the 9000 series number on iron castings only when the same design was cast in both bronze and iron. Perhaps the only thing more welcoming than an open door is a brightly colored cast-iron doorstop holding it ajar. Like the best collectibles, these seemingly indestructible household objects are as visually appealing as they are practical, adding a bit of charm and whimsy to any home. Doorstops first appeared in England in the late 1700s. Made of cast brass, they were used to help prop open the heavy English doors, allowing air to better circulate through homes. The earliest doorstops had wooden handles so they could be easily moved. Handles disappeared in the 19th century; by then, cast iron had replaced brass. Most doorstops youll find today were likely made in America sometime between the turn of the last century and 1940. They hit their peak of popularity during the 1920s and 30s. It is hard to determine the age of a doorstop simply by its design, as some of the most popular styles were manufactured for decades. Motifs were numerous: rose-covered cottages, ships, lighthouses, windmills, covered wagons, trains, baskets of flowers or fruit, ladies in fine dress, children, gnomes, holiday and fairy-tale figures, cats, dogs, cartoon characters, and more. Nearly all examples featured brightly colored enamel paint. Manufacturers included Hubley in Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Bradley & Hubbard in Meriden, Connecticut; Wilton Products Inc. In Wrightsville, Pennsylvania; Albany Foundry in Albany, New York; and A. Greenblatt Studios in Boston. Most makers ceased production with the onset of World War II, but not all: John Wright Co. In Wrightsville, Pennsylvania, now reproduces some of the original Hubley patterns. Though age is not the determining factor in assessing the value of a doorstop, a reproduction of an earlier pattern is worth a fraction of the price of the original. Condition, paint surface, and rarity of the design are very important to collectors. Rust and repainting can drastically affect values. The best advice for determining whether a doorstop is truly vintage, not reproduction, is to examine the surface closely. Does the wear look inconsistent with use? Is the paint too shiny? Run your hand over it a real vintage doorstop will feel smooth, whereas a reproduction will have a rough, sandy surface. Also, seams on reproductions are often mismatched, and pieces are sometimes painted on the back side. Original manufactures never were. Item Specific, Offering You Today : A rare and desirable Antique Cast Iron BOSTON TERRIER PUPPY DOG DOORSTOP. Authentic Foundry Original Paint Finish. This is a prized genuine antique and I feel to be in’very good plus’ collector’s investment grade used condition. He has been used and loved. Let him continue his time honored 100 year old tradition by holding your door open for you too; like a true Boston gentleman should. Item can be found in Cast Iron Collector’s Guides. More Item Specific Condition. Description and the most important part of the description for relative size, maker and marks if present, as well as all aspects of condition. The Boston Terrier Button you will notice in one of the pictures is a magnet – which is a simple test to assure you that it is indeed cast iron. There is no structure damage that I noticed during inspection but please use the zoom tool to be double sure I have not overlooked anything important or unimportant in my observations. Completely stable, meaning, no parts are missing or have ever been glued back on and there is no evidence of cracks, breaks, replacement, or repair to my eye. Finish is appropriate as well as texture for a makers typical materials; Paint or Patina is guaranteed to be 1st original finish unless otherwise noted. Creation date is from the cast iron/metals heyday era lasting from 1880’s into the early 1940’s (some Wright/Wilton pieces date into 1950’s). The Weight is shown in photos. To assess size, a soda can is 5 tall. Interesting Tidbit: Doorstops were made as doorstops, but heavy cast iron bookends were made as both during this era’s industrial age. Today many antique cast iron bookends are used as doorstops for their weight, aesthetic, and functionality; and likewise antique doorstops are sometimes now used simply as art sculptures. All my cast iron listings are basically the same from here down. Caring for your antique cast iron figurals : I find the best was to bring out your item’s best color, preserve it’s original paint, and to protect it from too dry or too humid an environment is to clean it with original pledge. Other than dry feather dusting, I use the original pledge about 2x a year. Your item will arrive as clean as possible without doing deep detailed cleaning or museum preservation work – I will leave that to you. How can something so’durable’ be so’rare’? Many Victorian and turn of the century cast iron and metal figural items are rare or completely lost because of wartime efforts that took place for nearly half of the last century. During the Great War, World War II and beyond, there were constant neighborhood drives to collect all non-essential cast iron and metal goods. These items were then melted down for their materials to help with the manufacturing for our wars necessities and armament. Other special finds are those items which would have been for children, which typically would have been used vigorously then thrown away once out-grown. To Collector’s these figural sculptures are basically time capsules of a bygone era, wearing their beautiful battered paint proudly. They also have intense historical value as authentic artistic creations of the United States of America’s industrial age pioneer heroes. So, that’s why if you find one of these special collectibles, you should consider it a prize, and if you are a serious collector, you probably consider it priceless. Susie, The Dutchess of Arkansas & Her Business : Since I find these little treasures everywhere I can not verify the origin of many pieces. All of my items will come to you in fresh, clean and safe packaging. I always leave feedback once I have received yours, this way I know your product made it into your waiting happy hands. I also have a brick and mortar location of The Dutchess of Arkansas inside The Rose Antique Mall should you ever visit the NWArkansas area. Someone get me my tiara! Rare Antique Hubley Cast Iron Doorstop Reclining Kitten Cat w Bow Original Paint
Rare Antique Hubley #122 Cast Iron Doorstop Reclining Kitten Cat with Bow & Fine Original Paint. Measures 8 1/2″ long and 4 1/4″ tall. It is a 2 part casting – the head is a separate cast piece held by screw. It is numbered inside 122 which is the correct number listed in the books. You virtually NEVER find this doorstop available for sale. I acquired it from a local estate sale many years ago and it has been one of my better doorstops in my personal collection. OK – the catalog attributes this as being made by National Foundry but I firmly believe it is much more likely Hubley for 2 reasons = Hubley was known for making 2 part cast doorstops and the font of the number 122 is exactly like what Hubley used. At any rate is is certainly a genuine and rare doorstop. Excellent condition with no damage and great paint all genuine original. The same doorstop is listed on page 121 of The Doorstop Encyclopedia by Smith as shown in the last photo. Guaranteed genuine old vintage as described with original paint. Perhaps the only thing more welcoming than an open door is a brightly colored cast-iron doorstop holding it ajar. Increase Sales by 18% and double your hits – Vendio Gallery. GREENBLATT STUDIO CAST IRON FLORAL BASKET DOORSTOP. The castings of the foundries of old, to wit, Albany Foundry, Bradley and Hubbard, National Foundry, Hubley, and Judd Company are unrivaled as “works of art” – the amount and degree of detail in those era pieces set them apart from the mass-produced pieces of later years. And, here we have a prime example of one of those early pieces. It’s a well-preserved, nicely detailed, antique, CAST IRON doorstop, exquisitely cast in the form of a RIBBON-HANDLED, FLOWER BASKET. This lovely doorstop is referenced in both Marilyn G. Hamburger’s book, “Collecting Figural Doorstops”, at page 88; and Jeanne Bertoia’s book, “Doorstops”, at page 144. Hamburger highlights this “fanciful ribbon-handled flower basket” as indeed belonging to the “Edwardian period – American” (the early 1900s). Remarkably, it retains NEARLY ALL of its ORIGINAL, ENAMEL PAINT! The WONDERFULLY VARIED, DETAILING COLORS are TRULY VIVID, VIBRANT, and RICHLY TONED! There is no spray painting here; it’s ALL HAND-PAINTED! Attesting to its age, there is chipping and wear to its original paint, accompanied by the welcomed exposure of the base coat, or that telltale, yet coveted, mahogany patina/hue of the exposed iron, that can only be brought about by age. None of the foregoing affects the integrity of the piece, but merely evidences its ANTIQUE character. The EXTRAORDINARY DETAIL of this EXCEPTIONALLY SMOOTH CASTING shines through in the painstakingly structured, wicker basket, brimming with an array of glorious flowers, with its festive, ribboned handle; as well as its splendid, five-sided plinth/base. Cognizant of the fact that the foundries of old frequently borrowed or purloined each other’s castings, rather than the much more commonly available rendition by the Judd Company (its 1259 design), this none-too-often-seen piece bears the APPROPRIATE tags, affixed to its backside, of A M GREENBLATT STUDIO and its Design Number 36 – see the relevant scans. Rendering an IMPRESSIVE PRESENCE, it weighs 5-odd lbs. And measures, approximately, 8 1/4 inches Tall, 6 inches Wide, and 2 1/4 inches Deep. There is no re-paint ALL ORIGINAL!!! Please excuse the glare/reflection of the light on the piece’s rich, enamel paint, which gives the impression that there are some white spots/areas on the piece; it is merely reflected light…. KINDLY VIEW ALL THE SCANS THAT FOLLOW…. Box is to be used, please submit the relevant zip code for a quote…. FREE image hosting (including supersized) with Vendio Sales Manager.
