Antique Cast Iron Door Stop Ally Sloper. This early 20th century cast iron figural doorstops have been made in the form of English cartoon character Alexander “Ally” Sloper. Ally was introduced to readers in 1867 and appeared in print regularly until 1916. He was “a Victorian ne’er-do-well with a good heart and a life of misadventure”, recognized for his less than desirable personality traits which included laziness and sneakiness. These characteristics gave rise to the name ally sloper due to Ally’s ability to “slope off” down an ally or elsewhere in order to dodge work or avoid other responsibilities. Ally has been depicted attired in a bowtie and tails along with his ubiquitous battered top hat. He holds an umbrella in his left hand and stands with his face in profile, emphasizing the shape and size of his bulbous nose. His canine companion is seated next to him, and regards the viewer with his head cocked quizzically to the side. These are from the old English cartoon about a drunken con man and his wife in. Sloper is depicted wearing a bonnet and holding a baby in each hand with a dog at her feet. Ally Sloper in depicted holding onto his umbrella for stability, he has an oversized nose and a top hat and he is dressed nicely with coattails visible. He also has a small dog at his feet. Sloper stands 10 7/8 tall and 6 1/8 across the base. Total weight is 3.7 lbs. Ally stands 11 1/8 tall and 6 1/8 across the base. Total weight is 3.5 lbs. The condition is shown in the photos. They are in fantastic condition. The enamel is bright, vibrant and appears to be original; only minimal chipping and enamel loss commiserate with age. Ally has a cast number on the back but it is illegible (3rd photo), I can not locate any number on Mrs. Antique/Vintage & Estate Items–These items are not new. Ally Sloper Antique Cast Iron Doorstop set of 2 English 19th Century. Being offered for sale is a pair of late 19th century cast iron English doorstops. These are from the old English cartoon about a drunken con man and his wife in. Sloper is depicted wearing a bonnet and holding a baby in each hand with a dog at her feet. Ally Sloper in depicted holding onto his umbrella for stability, he has an oversized nose and a top hat and he is dressed nicely with coattails visible. He also has a small dog at his feet. Sloper stands 10 7/8 tall and 6 1/8 across the base. Total weight is 3.7 lbs. Ally stands 11 1/8 tall and 6 1/8 across the base. Total weight is 3.5 lbs. The condition is shown in the photos. They are in fantastic condition. The enamel is bright, vibrant and appears to be original; only minimal chipping and enamel loss commiserate with age. Ally has a cast number on the back but it is illegible (3rd photo), I can not locate any number on Mrs. Antique/Vintage & Estate Items–These items are not new.
