Offered is a late 19th century, cast iron frog or toad, doorstop or windmill weight with webbed toes on the front feet. This is one of two from my 50 year collection presently listed for sale. Both are in great old paint. The other is a Victorian example of the heavily reproduced bullfrog, with four clubbed feet. This example looks more like a toad, with a warty surface, webbed front feet, and dissimilar back feet, that also have toes. Detailed casting throughout, and very, very old paint. There are chips on one or two toes on one foot, that have been there so long, they’re crusted over with dark brown rust. Beautiful patina with appropriate color, & wear and tear, where expected. In addition to being used to hold doors and as weights, figural iron pieces like this were being used in the mid 20th century in sidewalk newspaper & magazine stands to keep the stacks in place. I use them daily in my pantry to keep pet & bird feed sacks closed. Measures about 5″ long, 4 1/2″ wide, and 3 high. This hefty frog weighs almost 5#. Most of my items have been off the market, from estates, or in collections for decades.
