RARE LATE 19TH CENTURY, LARGE 12’PUNCH & JUDY’ (UK) FIGURATIVE, MONUMENTAL CAST IRON DOOR STOP. 1880, W/ORIGINAL MATTER BLACK PAINTED ENAMEL FINISH. Late 19th century cast iron English door stops. 12″ Height x 9″ Width x 3 ½ Depth. Original matte black painted enamel surface. Only dusted, rinsed with tepid water and then quickly dried with a soft cotton cloth and then oiled to prevent oxidation to the cleaned cast iron surfaces. It was originally filthy and covered with dust, grime and sediment. It had to be cleaned in order to photograph and allow the viewer to see its honest, original painted surfaces. There are some minor episodes of oxidation and superficial breaks in the paint, which only prove that the piece is in fact an original, period one and not a later reproduction and which, still features its original black painted surface. There are no repairs and no significant damage to report. It’s stunning, exceedingly rare and in about more or less the same condition it was in, oh say, about 135-140 years ago, which in and of itself, is simply remarkable. Found along with another painted’Punch & Judy’ large, 12 door stop from the same estate on the North Shore of Massachusetts. Honest, straight and as right as rain. Magnificent & top shelf.
