The cat is white in color with yellow eyes having dark pupils. The cat’s ears are perked up and have a pink interior. He has a blue bow around its neck and shows black whiskers around its mouth. The doorstop has a flat base and shows the details of the pillow including a rope along its edge. The casting is nicely done and shows details of the cat’s fur, eyes, mouth, tail next to its body, legs and paws. The back of the piece is painted in off white and is fairly soiled and displays no markings that we could find. This is a rather heavy doorstop given its size, it weighs over 5 pounds against a height of 8 1/2. The bottom of the base is is flat and is half oval in shape. A beautiful and rather rare doorstop worthy of a spot in your collection. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of the description. Date: Uncertain but most likely early to mid 20th century. Size: Measures 8 1/2″ in height with the base measuring 6 1/8″ by 2. The piece weighs over 5 pounds and 1 ounce. However, our research suggests that a The Connecticut Foundry made similar doorstops, but a bit smaller, in 1929. Distinguishing Characteristics – Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice and uncommon old doorstop. It weighs over 5 pounds and is in great condition with minimum losses to its beautiful coloring. A beautiful piece which would display very well in your collection of doorstops. Condition: This doorstop is in very good condition with no breaks or repairs. It retains quite a bit of its original coloring (estimated > 85%) with some wear and loss of coloring, especially at the edge of the pillow, around the eyes, and at the high points of the cat’s fur. However, its colors are still vivid and beautiful. The bottom of the base shows some soiling, spots of rust, and wear. There are also a few minor spots of rust which are seen on the body in general, but nothing of concern. All of these issues do not distract from the piece’s beauty and quality. No cracks or chips and still has pink ears and painted eyes. 11″ long and 6″ high. All of the items I sell are vintage, antique or collectible and will show some signs of use or wear. However, our research suggests that a The Connecticut Foundry made similar doorstops, but a bit smaller, in 1929. Distinguishing Characteristics – Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice and uncommon old doorstop. It weighs over 5 pounds and is in great condition with minimum losses to its beautiful coloring. A beautiful piece which would display very well in your collection of doorstops. Condition: This doorstop is in very good condition with no breaks or repairs. It retains quite a bit of its original coloring (estimated > 85%) with some wear and loss of coloring, especially at the edge of the pillow, around the eyes, and at the high points of the cat’s fur. However, its colors are still vivid and beautiful. The bottom of the base shows some soiling, spots of rust, and wear. There are also a few minor spots of rust which are seen on the body in general, but nothing of concern. All of these issues do not distract from the piece’s beauty and quality. I have a large collection of cast iron flower doorstops and this is one of my favorites. This Hubley flower basket doorstop is marked #182 and appears in Hubley catalogs with this number. This Hubley doorstop appears in several reference books for cast iron collectibles. Hubley was famous for their wonderful cast iron toys, doorstops and book ends. Hubley creations are true Americana! Hubley made many painted cast iron flower basket doorstops and they remain highly sought by collectors today. Gardeners enjoy collecting these old cast iron flower doorstops. This Hubley doorstop has a pink & creme (or white) basket. There are several flowers in pink, red, blue and white with yellow centers & green leaves. The colors remain vivid although the doorstop was probably painted around 1920 -1940 and has been used. The paint appears to be original and untouched. The doorstop has typical wear found on these old cast iron doorstops including wear to the paint, chips, rust, scrapes, dirt and scratches. It has not been altered by me by waxing, washing, touching up or anything else. The Hubley #182 flower basket doorstop has not been used as a doorstop for the last 40+ years, rather it was on display. I believe the condition of the paint is very good compared to similar cast iron doorstops. The aged wear and patina on the paint is part of the great charm for these American treasures from the past.
