Rare Early Antique Cast Iron Red Head Duck Sink Box Decoy Orig Paint Doorstop
POSSIBLY LONG ISLAND DECOY. VERY HEAVY – 32 LBS. Every once in awhile you come across something that is so amazingly outstanding. Well, if you are into waterfowl history or gunning, this Rare Early Antique Cast Iron Sink Box Red Head Duck Decoy is going to make you lose your mind. Late in the 19th Century, sink boxes were special boats that floated nearly level with the surface of the water. The hunter/market gunner would lie down inside of the boat with cast iron decoys all around the flat outside edges of the boat that would hold the boat level with the water. These Sink Box Cast Iron Decoys also helped to lure ducks within shooting range. There are examples of these boats in many of the Decoy Museums such as the Chesapeake Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, MD and Havre de Grace, MD Decoy Museum. Sink Box Boats were outlawed in the 1930s. I attached a photo of a hunter or market gunner in his sink box boat lined with cast iron sink box decoys (canvasbacks) for your reference. This Amazing Cast Iron Red Head Duck Sink Box Decoy dates from the Early 19th Century and was used exactly for the purpose as described above. It is in Excellent Condition with great aged Patina. Most of the Cast Iron Sink Box Decoys are Canvasbacks. The Red Head Duck Sink Box Decoy is probably the most Rare. First one that I have come across. Today many people love these Antique Cast Iron Sink Box Decoys as Doorstops. They go great with any collection of Vintage Decoys or Americana or to display by a Fireplace or the Mantle. The Original Finish and Paint are still intact, especially on the head of the duck as it has a reddish coloration. This great old Red Head has an inlet head and the eyes are raised (reminds me of tack eyes on decoys). Of course, this was a cast iron sink box decoy that saw a lot of action, so there is the appropriate gunning wear and tear to the cast iron. It has earned its bumps and bruises, has some pitting. A nip on its butt, and on the right side (facing left) there is an area of missing cast iron. Not sure this wasn’t a Foundry flaw, but could be from serious hunting usage. It has been said that this is a Long Island (probably the South Shore) Sink Box Decoy, but I know they were certainly used on the Chesapeake Bay as well. This is a Full Size Solid Body Cast Iron Sink Box Decoy which is quite heavy weighing 32 pounds. It is the heaviest one that I have ever owned. It measures 13 inches in length, 6 inches in height and 6 3/8 inches in width. It is flat on the bottom, and there appears to be some writing on the bottom but I can’t make it out. There are plastic tabs on the bottom so you can display it on a fireplace or mantle without damaging the surface. Please review the many photos to determine condition. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to own this outstanding RARE and Early Cast Iron Red Head Duck Sink Box Decoy and add it to your collection.
