Elusive, (and rarely seen in this condition) original fox doorstop manufactured in the 1930’s & 40’s by WILTON and in their classic red & black finish. This is usually referenced as the sleeping fox, but the eyes are open, so I prefer to call it the reclining fox. There is no older version of this doorstop, only modern unmarked reproductions, crudely cast & and seen in a faux rust finish or painted solid brown. This is the piece pictured in all reference books. It’s sad that there are more people watching an unmarked modern reproduction of this piece presently than this genuine marked example in great shape. Artistically rendered and finely cast in thick iron, this piece is offered in it’s factory polychrome red & black finish, with only age appropriate wear. In very good to fine condition. Has been in my personal collection for over 40 years. Measures 7″ long X 4″ deep X 1 3/4 tall, and weighs almost 4 lbs. Cast into the the underside, is the manufacturers name; WILTON. The only doorstops manufactured in the 19th century were English style door porters. American manufacturing of doorstops didn’t reach it’s apex until the 2nd quarter of the 20th century. If it’s indeed 19th or early 20th century American iron, the majority will be proudly marked with the manufacturers name, though there are more and more grainy cast copies with markings surfacing. I don’t own a single doorstop that isn’t marked. There are also drastic differences between antique iron and modern pieces. Also, beware of anything covered in orange rust, or painted solid brown, green, gold, or white, which are the colors used on most modern fakes. All antique iron was airbrushed (polychromed) with multiple colors of paint (not brushed), or bronzed. Feel free to ask questions!
