The Hubley Manufacturing Company was first incorporated in 1894 in. The first Hubley toys appeared in 1909 and were made of cast-iron, with themes that ranged from horse-drawn vehicles and different breeds of dogs, to tractors, steam shovels and guns. Hubley’s main competition in the early years was Arcade. Early toys were known for their complexity; a delicate 11 inch long Packard Straight 8, a five-ton truck that came complete with tools, a road roller that came in five different sizes, a steam shovel with working arms and shovel, and Chrysler Airflows with take-apart bodies. Hubley’s casting process involved several steps. For a particular toy, bookend, or doorstop, metalworkers would first carve a wood form, or hammer out the basic design in metal. Pressing this form into finely compacted sand created an impression for molding. Cast iron heated to 3000 degrees was poured into the sand mold and, when cooled, the form would pop out. Rough edges would be filed away and the mold ready for mass production casting. Painters applied a base coat (usually white or cream but sometimes black) to cast figures whether toys or doorstops. Then, colorists used a variety of hues highlighting important details. This is a pre-owned item and I take great care to accurately describe the item but please see the pictures for full details. Vintage Boston Terrier Cast Iron Doorstop with Red Leather Collar (Hubley-style)

Vintage Boston Terrier Cast Iron Doorstop with rare original Hubley-like Red Leather Collar. Note that collar is attached and perfect for display purposes, but the leather is partially torn at the hole where it buckles. Original Paint– nice patina–I didn’t try to clean it. Measures about 9″ long, 4″wide, 9 tall, and weighs 5lb, 5oz. From an estate sale. NOTE: I have been told by a Hubley collector that this is not a Hubley, but it is a very nice period copy! Vintage 1949 Cast Iron Fox Hunting Motif Door Stops – Union Manufacturing Co. These vintage cast iron door stops with fox hunting motif subjects were manufactured in 1949 by the Union Manufacturing Company, Bowertown, PA. The door stops are over 11″ tall, 6 1/4″ across, 4 1/4 deep and weigh over nine pounds. Both exceptional pieces marked JZH for John Zimmerman Harker, owner of the manufacturing company, DS for door stop and the number 1. Information about the stops is found in KOVELS Antique Guide. The focal point is the fox mask framed by two hunt whips and two hunt boots topped with a grape vine. These are very rare. Some suface rust is present here and there but it is just on the surface and can be removed by spraying the doorstop down with a lubricant or WD4. Some people want them untouched (which they are). Vintage Cast Iron Doorstop Colorful Heron Standing Albany Foundry Company. For Your Vintage Cast Iron Doorstop Collection. Description: A very nice vintage cast iron doorstop. The doorstop is cast in the form of colorful heron standing. The heron has a gold colored head with some red colored highlights a white eye with black pupil. The heron’s body is colored in blue with gold and red highlights. The bird is standing on what looks like rocks. The doorstop has a flat base and shows the details of the rocks and the bird’s foot. The casting is very well done and shows details of the head, the feathers in the wing, and the details of the rocks. The back of the piece is painted in blue and shows the number “83” and possibly a “6” to its right near the base. The bottom of the base is covered with green felt and shows minor rust spots. A beautiful and rather rare doorstop worthy of a spot in your collection. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of the description. Date: Uncertain but most likely early to mid 20th century. Size: Measures 7 1/2″ in height with the base measuring 5″ by 2 3/8. The piece weighs about 3 pounds. Maker: Albany Foundry Company. Marks: Has the number “83” stamped on the back and possibly the number “6” stamped next to oit near the bottom of the back. Distinguishing Characteristics – Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice and uncommon old doorstop. It weighs about 3 pounds and almost and is in exquisite condition with minimum losses to the beautiful coloring. A beautiful piece which would display very well in your collection of doorstops. Condition: This doorstop is in excellent good condition with no breaks or repairs. It retains most of its original coloring (estimated > 97%) with minimum wear and loss of coloring. The colors are vivid and beautiful. The felt on the bottom of the base shows some losses, soiling and wear. There are a few minor spots of rust which are seen on the base but are not evident elsewhere on the piece. All of this does not distract from the piece’s beauty and quality.
