In exceptionally good condition, this circa 1944 original anti-Hitler skunk doorstop/paperweight was a popular item of Allied propaganda. I’ve seen this hybrid given the nickname “Skitler” for the grotesque combination of a skunk and Hitler, and, in their 1944 catalog, the Johnson Smith & Company offered this door stopper, naming it “Der Phew-er” (the Fuhrer). Hitler’s face is hand painted and the surviving examples I’ve seen of this piece show various levels of artistic ability. Here, Hitler is well painted and most of the detail remains. Cast into the underside of the upright tail are the names of Mussolini (Italian leader) & Hirohito (Japanese leader) with an arrow pointing downward to the unmentionable area. Excellent condition, but possibly paint retouched on nose and chin. Length: 5 inches Weight: 2 lb.
