Antique Hubley #455 “Cosmos in Vase” Large Cast Iron Door Stop. Large & rare doorstop. The #455 is the largest that Hubley made. It is actually the very same number as the Black Eyed Susan Hubley doorstop. Look closely and you will see the only difference is the paint scheme. Shown in “The Doorstop Book” by John & Nancy Smith on page 44. This piece is in very good to excellent condition with minor paint loss. Original paint, has not been touched up. Marked on the back with the Hubley number 455. Large door stop, weighs 8 lbs. Measures 17 3/4 inches tall and 10 1/4 inches wide. Antique HUBLEY DOG cast iron DOOR STOP large painted metal WIRE FOX TERRIER. Handsome antique cast iron doorstop depicts an alert Wire Fox Terrier dog. Dog is painted ceamy white with classic markings; black/brown head spots and a black “saddle” spot on his back. A slender red collar is painted around his neck. Larger than many doorstops, dog measures 10″ tall and 11″ long. Well cared for but note there is paint loss, please examine the photos. Info from the internet: The Hubley Manufacturing Company was first incorporated in 1894 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The first Hubley toys appeared in 1909 and were made of cast-iron, with themes that ranged from horse-drawn vehicles and different breeds of dogs, to tractors, steam shovels and guns (Smitsonian Institution, website). Hubley’s casting process involved several steps. For a particular toy, bookend, or doorstop, metalworkers would first carve a wood form, or hammer out the basic design in metal. Pressing this form into finely compacted sand created an impression for molding. Cast iron heated to 3000 degrees was poured into the sand mold and, when cooled, the form would pop out. Rough edges would be filed away and the mold ready for mass production casting. Painters applied a base coat (usually white or cream but sometimes black) to cast figures whether toys or doorstops. Then, colorists used a variety of hues highlighting important details (Collectics. Com). Antique Cast Iron House of Seven Gables Doorstop

Antique Cast Iron House of Seven Gables Doorstop. Rather rare & desirable doorstop designed by Sarah Symonds. Shown in “The Doorstop Book” By John & Nancy Smith on page 235. The House of the Seven Gables is a colonial mansion in Salem, Massachusetts. The House was built in 1668 by Captain John Turner. The mansion was made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s book, “The House of Seven Gables” written in 1850. The Book’s Setting was inspired by Hawthorne’s cousin Susanna Ingersoll who once owned the house and by Hawthorne’s other ancestors who had played a role in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. Sarah Symonds once had a gift shop across from the House of Seven Gables. This Doorstop was made to commemorate its restoration in 1909. Very good to excellent condition with minor paint loss. All original, has not been re-touched. Measures 8 1/2 inches long, 4 3/4 inches tall and weighs 6.2 lbs. Antique & Rare Cast Iron Doorstop Hubley English Bulldog Original Paint

Description: Antique and very rare cast iron doorstop cast in the form of an English Bulldog. The Bulldog is in great condition with its original paint. The detail and patina on the piece is great. This is piece weighs about 4.5 pounds. This vintage doorstop is represented in John and Nancy Smith’s book “The Doorstop Book: An Encyclopedia of Doorstop Collecting” Published by Schieffer Books, Atglen, PA in 2006. See page 128 for a similar examples. Please carefully review photos as they are part and parcel of the description. Size: 9″ high, 5.0″ wide and 6.50 long. Marks: None I can see. Distinguishing Characteristics – Most Interesting About The Piece: This is definitely a nice and relatively scarce doorstop. It weighs about 4.5 pounds. Condition: This doorstop is in good condition with no breaks or repairs. It is all original and retains quite a bit of its original paint.
