Antique HUBLEY DOG cast iron DOOR STOP large painted metal WIRE FOX TERRIER. Handsome antique cast iron doorstop depicts an alert Wire Fox Terrier dog. Dog is painted ceamy white with classic markings; black/brown head spots and a black “saddle” spot on his back. A slender red collar is painted around his neck. Larger than many doorstops, dog measures 10″ tall and 11″ long. Well cared for but note there is paint loss, please examine the photos. Info from the internet: The Hubley Manufacturing Company was first incorporated in 1894 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The first Hubley toys appeared in 1909 and were made of cast-iron, with themes that ranged from horse-drawn vehicles and different breeds of dogs, to tractors, steam shovels and guns (Smitsonian Institution, website). Hubley’s casting process involved several steps. For a particular toy, bookend, or doorstop, metalworkers would first carve a wood form, or hammer out the basic design in metal. Pressing this form into finely compacted sand created an impression for molding. Cast iron heated to 3000 degrees was poured into the sand mold and, when cooled, the form would pop out. Rough edges would be filed away and the mold ready for mass production casting. Painters applied a base coat (usually white or cream but sometimes black) to cast figures whether toys or doorstops. Then, colorists used a variety of hues highlighting important details (Collectics. Com). Exceptional and RARE Antique Sleeping Cast Iron Black Sleeping Cat life size life like Doorstop, Excellent condition, well preserved! Approximate dimensions are 5″ Tall 16 ” wide, 10 ¼ long, appx 25 pounds. Little signs of use as doorstop, small white paint mark on side where got nicked by door. Circa early 1900’s, less than 1000 were produced by Albany and National. It has been said that less than 80 are still in circulation. All were taken by the war efforts. Antique Cast Iron House of Seven Gables Doorstop. Rather rare & desirable doorstop designed by Sarah Symonds. Shown in “The Doorstop Book” By John & Nancy Smith on page 235. The House of the Seven Gables is a colonial mansion in Salem, Massachusetts. The House was built in 1668 by Captain John Turner. The mansion was made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s book, “The House of Seven Gables” written in 1850. The Book’s Setting was inspired by Hawthorne’s cousin Susanna Ingersoll who once owned the house and by Hawthorne’s other ancestors who had played a role in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. Sarah Symonds once had a gift shop across from the House of Seven Gables. This Doorstop was made to commemorate its restoration in 1909. Very good to excellent condition with minor paint loss. All original, has not been re-touched. Measures 8 1/2 inches long, 4 3/4 inches tall and weighs 6.2 lbs.
