This is a very rare piece to find. Not entirely sure if these were originally painted or not. But the paint that remains on this piece gives it an amazing look. Really hard to find example of a Sherwin Williams cast iron doorstop or figure. This is a chameleon for Sherwin Williams paints and varnishes. Hard to get photos of this awesome piece to do justice. Appears to have some traces of the original golden colour on the sides. He is marked to the underside “The Sherwin-Williams Co Paint & Varnish Makers”. 1890’s Large Advertising Cast Iron Frog Countertop Display, or Door Stop Santa Ana Calif. The advertising is on the underside of the frog, and there is some original paint on the underside too, the color seems to be varying shades of brown. The paint is no longer on the top side of the frog, but it is clearly old looking. Cast Iron, approximately 5 1/2″ long by 4 1/2″ wide, and 3 tall. There is some light surface rust in the top side crevices and on the under side also, but not much. The Santa Ana Iron Works was founded in the 1880’s and was the oldest Iron works in the county, and the largest, occupying a full city block. Sadly, it no longer exists. This is a beautiful Cast Iron Metal Advertising Doorstop. The Sherwin Williams Company which started in the 1870’s used the cast iron piece for advertising. They would give these away as promotions. The bottom is marked, The Sherwin Williams Co. Paint & Varnish Maker. It is in nice condition. The tail is bent up slightly. Even with a lot of the paint worn off it has a beautiful look. It measures approximately 8 1/2″ long the feet 5″ wide 1 1/2 tall. It also has a little bit of surface rust. Presented for your consideration is this neat antique doorstop (or paperweight). The doorstop is made of solid cast iron and is in the shape of a frog with raised lettering down its back. Reads I Croak For the Jackson Wagon. The Jackson Wagon was a model of wagon produced by the Austin, Tomilson & Webster Mfg. One of these wagons was used by P. Barnum for his circus, transporting Jumbo the Elephant. The wagon was also praised by Ulysses S. Austin, Tomilson & Webster shut down in 1911. This neat doorstop is guaranteed to be old and all original. Would make a great addition to any advertising or doorstop collection! Light wear from age and use. No cracks, breaks or repairs.
