RARE DOOR STOP CAST IRON AMERICANA DUCK with TOP HAT DOORSTOP 1930s COMICAL
Offered is a wonderful ANTIQUE DUCK with top hat and pants SOLID CAST IRON EARLY AMERICANA DOORSTOP. It is undoubtedly from the 1930s. This belonged to my Aunt who died last year at the age of 99. I have no one to will it to. The base measures approximately 4 ¼ by 3, it is approximately 7 ¾ high. It retains much of the original paint. It is quite heavy, solid, strong and well made. Please see photos; they are part of the description. It is a lovely piece. It has not been washed, cleaned or waxed. I cannot find a hallmark. However, there is a piece of tape holding a label on the bottom that reads: Doorstop, duck, full body, pants and top hat, cast iron, 8 ¼ in. I’ve measured it several times and still come out with 7 ¾. I have no way of knowing how old this piece of paper is; it is yellowing. There may be a bit of rust. Again, please look closely at the SIX photos showing every angle of this wonderful little door stop. Imagine this great find as a gift or part of your own collection! Measuring 9 1/4″ tall by 5 1/4″ wide and 2 1/2 deep, this Cast Iron Doorstop depicts a young Black Girl, dressed in a Halloween Ghost Costume. She is holding a Jack-o-Lantern in her hands and the back of this doorstop is marked B & H Mfg Co. There are also two initials below this mark that looks like P. The painted surface you see on this rare Bradley & Hubbard Doorstop is guaranteed to be the first, original paint. Although there is wear to this paint, there are no breaks or any restorations to the cast iron. I knew Tom personally… My Dad and myself set up next to him for years at several shows including Brimfield, Ma. He was a one of kind individual and was a very talented folk art artist. He created many original pieces of work that included wood carvings such as signs, fish decoys, chain saw carvings, etc. These pieces were all hand painted by him. Tom also created many different original doorstops. Most I’m sure, if 2 or 3 of each exist today I would be surprised. We are offering today one of these rare doorstops! This one he titled Southern Sam and is marked with this name on the back of the piece. He also marked the back with c 1908 TB. TB were of course his initials. The owner of this site I do not know, but he obviously knew Tom very well. He has many great pictures of Tom and also his carvings and doorstops. He notes many of his doorstops have brought several thousand dollars. I enjoyed knowing Tom and always looked forward to his many stories. One of things I remember most is how not a single child would not pass him without doing a double take… He looked like Santa.
