Vintage University of Pennsylvania Bookends CSG Cast Iron Bronze Seal Midcentury. Pair of vintage cast iron bookends featuring the official seal of the University of Pennsylvania. Made by Charles S. (CSG USA), known for their mid-20th century collegiate memorabilia. These heavy bookends weigh approximately 4 lbs each and feature a bronze-finish medallion with the Latin motto. “Sine Moribus, Vana” – meaning Without morals, all is in vain. The seal displays a stack of books labeled with the classical subjects of a liberal education: Theologia, Astronomia, Philosophia, Mathematica, Logica, Rhetorica, Grammatica. The same form was used for other schools like Dartmouth and Harvard during this period. Marked on reverse with the CSG USA makers mark. Strong academic, historic, and architectural presence-ideal for collectors of university memorabilia or classic decor. Condition: Excellent structural condition with light finish wear from age. Material: Cast iron with bronze wash finish.

This is an original cast iron Pointer dog doorstop manufactured by the Hubley Manufacturing Company in Lancaster Pennsylvania USA. The piece has retained its original hand painted finish which shows wear and knicks and chips. It is in excellent condition with the appropriate patina for its age. DATE OF MANUFACTURE: 1910 -1940. MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES: Cast Iron, hand painted. CONDITION: Very good-Wear consistent with age and use. HISTORY: The Hubley Manufacturing Co. Was incorporated in 1894 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania by John Hubley and produced hand painted cast-iron toys and household objects such as doorstops, bookends and bottle openers with themes that ranged from different breeds of dogs, to horses and cars. In the casting process, metalworkers would carve out a wooden form or hammer the design out in metal. The form was then pressed into finely compacted sand, making an impression, and the cast iron was heated to 3000 degrees which was then poured into the sand mold. N the decorating department, painters applied a base coat of white, cream or black to the piece and colorists used a variety of hues to achieve defining features. 5 3/8″ from tip of his nose to the tip of the tail, 8″ inches tall and 3 3/8 at the widest part of his head. Old Hubley Sealyham Terriers, one a bookend and one a paperweight. Aged paint with red collars, dark eyes. Paperweight about two and a quarter inches tall. Bookend about four and a half inches tall. Sometimes referred to a doorstop. Paperweight pretty nice condition, minor wear. Bookend has a lot of paint loss and rust but is one of the rarer Hubleys.
