CAST IRON SINKBOX CANVASBACK. JOHN GRAHAM – UPPER CHESAPEAKE BAY MODEL. EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION WITH ORIGINAL FINISH. Antique Original Cast Iron Sinkbox Wing Duck Decoys in this condition don’t become available very often. This is a wonderful example of a John Graham Canvasback from the Upper Bay of the Chesapeake Bay. John Graham was born and lived in Charlestown, Maryland (1822 – 1912) located up above the Susquehanna River. This great old Cast Iron Sinkbox Decoy is in exceptional condition without any cracks or repairs. It has its original finish although there is some age related pitting. It has a Solid Body with a great aged patina. This Antique piece of Cast Iron is quite heavy weighing over 18 pounds. It measures 13 inches long, 5 1/2 inches in height and 6 1/4 inches in width. Today many antique cast iron collectors use these great old functional Sinkbox Duck Decoys as Doorstops. Here is some history from Wikipedia regarding the Sinkbox Boats, waterfowl hunting and the Cast Iron Sinkbox Wing Duck Decoys. Were used as ballast, placed on top of the sinkbox boat to disguise the sinkbox, and to attract game close to the hunters. A sinkbox boat is a specialized. I have for sale an antique small cast iron door stop in the original old paint. I couldn’t find a similar example with him walking, and he is not marked. I did find a similar example of one just standing with all four paws on the floor. I do not know if it is Hubley, or not, but it is a quality maker, as the doorstop has nice and tight seams.
