At first glance, you might think this is just another cast iron doorstop. Although it certainly could be used as one, I believe it was originally designed to be used as a salesman’s sample. I’ve never seen another like it and could only find one online that was very similar, and it’s described as a rare salesman’s sample. Makes sense to me. It’s a complete fireplace, with a mantel that has a lion and its prey on the top with a shield between them. There are columns on both sides of the fireplace, with brass bars across the fire pit, as well as a brass fender. The fender is not attached to the piece, but simply rests in front of it. Amazing that it was not lost over the years! The fireplace has ornate cast iron leaves and fruit decoration on both sides. This intriguing piece is all original, down to the nuts and bolts that hold it together. It’s a large and heavy piece, measuring 11″ wide and 13″ tall. It’s in excellent condition for its age, which research tells me is circa 1880s.
