RARE Sarah Symonds Fence Cast Iron Doorstop Door Stop Peirce Nichols House Salem

RARE SARAH SYMONDS “FENCE” CAST IRON DOORSTOP. Sarah’s goods were made through very complex stages which produced fine details. She was a skillful marketer, advertising souvenir mementos for tourists. Symonds was widely known for her figurines and bas relief plaques of historic sites throughout New England. Her door knockers and doorstops are highly collectible, and their values continue to rise. This beautifully detailed doorstop depicts a white garden fence with an urn-shaped final. Behind and above the fence are blooming rose bushes. A brick walkway is in front of the fence. The inspiration for this doorstop came from the Peirce-Nichols House, a famous old residence in Salem. The house was built in the Georgian style in 1792 for Jerathmiel Peirce. In 1801, the house was remodeled and at that time, the front fence was crafted with decorative urns. The doorstop stands about 8″ tall and measures approximately 4 1/2″ wide. The back side of the rose bush portion is painted dark green and the back of the fence finial is painted white. The front edge of the walkway has remnants of the original markings, which appear to have once read “NICHOLS HOUSE” and SARAH W. This doorstop is pictured on page 162 in the book ” Doorstops ” by Jeanne Bertoia. It’s guaranteed to be an original Sarah Symonds doorstop and NOT a modern reproduction (this doorstop has not been reproduced). Condition of this vintage doorstop is VERY GOOD and much better than most examples I’ve seen photos of. The paint has some nicks, especially on the front edge of the base, but is all original with no touch up. Overall, this doorstop looks great and displays well. One of Salems most talented crafting families was named Symonds. It included English joiner John Symonds ca. Their more modern descendant is Sarah Symonds, a sculptor, artist and craftsman who was born in Victorian Salem in 1870, five years after the Civil War ended in 1865. She is thought to have been in the ninth generation of descent from patriarch John, last in a local line that included John b. 1841 and Sarah b. Her pieces made commercially for sale in Salem after about 1905 were typically made through a complex series of stages, involving evidently the crafting of a clay original model, the painting on of a latex or liquid molding compound, the pouring of new plaster casts in latex molds, and the painting of finished plaster casts. From her casts and models, she also produced ornamental painted items made of cast iron like the fantastic antique original doorstop listed here. A beautifully detailed Sarah W. Symonds cast iron door stop. A white garden fence with an architectural final is featured with rose bushes and a brick pathway. The final has been decorated with swags and a flame torch. This architectural piece not only works for the original purpose but also would be an excellent piece to decorate a potting shed or cutting room Bunny Williams style. Rare Antique House Of Seven Gables Cast Iron Doorstop Made By Sarah W Symonds

This hard to find piece, was made circa 1909 by Sarah W. Symonds to commemorate the restoration of the Seven Gables House which was originally built in 1668. The house was also known as the Captain John Turner House and stands at 54 Turner Street Salem, Mass. It measures 8 3/8″ wide x 4 3/4″ tall and has Sarah W. Symonds signature on the back. It is in very good original condition with No breaks, cracks, repairs or repainting. There is a layer of rust on it, but the colors can be seen underneath. I was told by a few people, that rust solvents can be used to bring back the color but I choose to keep it in it’s original charming condition.
