Pair of generously proportioned , painted cast iron door stop porter mantle lions, seated with front paws resting on a scrolled element, haunches supported on a shaped plinth with decorative, raised scrollwork on the front. This pose is used in British and other heraldic devices and is technically called “A “lion sejant erect”, with the lion seated on its haunches, but with its body erect and both forepaws raised in the “rampant” position (this is sometimes termed “sejant-rampant). 70 pounds original paint in green red undercoat. Huge American cast iron LION art statue / sculpture / doorstop, weighing in at 18 pounds and in excellent aged condition with normal wear as shown. These very rare cast iron lions, upon request, were hand poured with an additional 6 pounds of iron for the purpose of holding back very heavy doors. These are exceedingly rare and were specially ordered. It is extremely heavy, thick, strong and well made. Wonderful cast iron artistic detailing. It is in its original state, as found in an Atlanta Buckhead Estate. Please please be aware that leaving anything less than 5 stars is seen as below standard. A very rare original early Victorian COALBROOKDALE CAST IRON DOOR STOP / FIRE PLACE DECORATION. Made from iron smeltered in Coalbrookdales own blast furnace which was the first of its kind during the 1700s when the companies founder first invented the process. Shaped with lioness or panther type large cat set amongst foliage, vines etc. Is fully marked to reverse. THE COALBROOKDALE COMPANY REGISTERED OCTOBER 28th 1841, No 895. There is a very old 19th century repair plate to the back of the piece had strengthens a couple of cracks to the stem, although the piece was NOT broken completely across in two pieces. Obviously this repair was done by a very skilled blacksmith with hammered rivets through the piece. The plate does obscure the outline of a small section of the upper stem but i think the repair is a piece of art in itself. So highly regarded was this particular piece that the repair was undertaken. Size: 38 x 17 x 7.5 cms. Condition: Is in total original aged condition with no over painting – some minor surface rust and wear and that repair plate to the back of the stem (see pics). With good packing available.
