Delightfully characterful and evocative of heraldic forms, this doorstop brings period appeal and weighty practicality. Recumbent lion motif with naïve execution and medieval overtones – a distinctive decorative presence. Cast iron form with satisfying heft, weighing in at 4.07kg, perfect for securing internal doors. Displays a rich, mottled brown patina, enhanced by subtle weathering commensurate with age. Sculpted with emphasis on character and bold form, suggestive of 19th century folk artistry. Circa 1920s-30s with Original Paint. 10-1/4″ tall x 5-1/2″ wide. There is an impressed number “2” on the back. There are several different versions of this doorstop. The most common is the JZH version dated 1949, which is a lesser quality casting than this one, and the JZH looks newer. The original version appears to be English from the 1880s, which is definitely older than this one. We have seen this one, with the same paint color scheme, misidentified as the JZH 1949 version and erroneously listed as the original that was repainted. We have not found anything definite about who made this version and when. The exact purple and pink paint on this one, appears on others from the same period so it is not a repaint, which would be unique. This paint has an old patina and application that seems consistent with 1920s-30s cast iron pieces. If anyone has specific information about this version, send us a message. There is normal wear to the original paint from age and use. There is a spot of damage just above the pink flower.
