You are looking at a RARE vintage cast iron Boston Terrier doorstop. The brown paint is what I would say is generally what you see from a doorstop this old with chips and missing paint. But no cracks, and no signs of repair. Most of this style doorstops are colored black. As this one is a rarer brown. The door stop is two pieces of cast iron metal with the original straight head screw. It’s in the shape of a Boston Terrier with its head turned to the LEFT. Which in itself is a rarity. As 97% of these same style doorstops are the head turned to the right. The piece measures 9 3/4 inches tall by 9 3/4 inches long. It’s almost 9 lbs. Original paint, not a reproduction, touched up or altered in anyway. Most people are listing these left facing stops as a Hubley. With extensive research on this item I have found out that Hubley had never made a left facing bulldog doorstop. This Information came directly from Hubley’s identification guide book. Hubley never cast a identification mark or number on any of these dog stops as it was said that it would take away from the look of the figure. Not much more to say about this rarer piece except it would look great in your collection as something different and unique.

The doorstop is cast in the form of a hawk perched on what appears to be brown rock with large leaves next to it. The hawk is standing on the perch with his tail pointing down and its head looking slightly downwards. The hawk is gray in color with a yellow beak, yellow talons, and blackeyes. The base as well as the perch are colored in brown. The piece retains most of its original paint with some losses to the front of the beak, the edge of the base, and a few small spots throughout the body of the piece. The back of the doorstop has brown coloring and is stamped 78 at the bottom edge. A great looking piece worthy of a spot in your collection. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of the description. Date: Uncertain but most likely early to mid 1900s (early to mid 20th century). Size: Measures 6″ in height with the base measuring 4 1/8″ by 2 3/4. The piece weighs slightly over 2 pounds and one ounce. Marks: Marked with the stamped number “78” on the back at the bottom edge. Distinguishing Characteristics – Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice old doorstop in excellent condition and retaining most of its original paint. A beautiful piece which would display very well in your collection of doorstops. Condition: This doorstop is in very good condition with no breaks or repairs. It retains quite a bit of its original paint with some losses (estimated at better than 98%). Most of the paint losses are front of the beak and the edge of the base as well as additional minor paint losses throughout. The piece is a bit soiled and would probably benefit for a good cleaning. It does have some minor rust signs to the bottom of the base. It also lost one of the four round pieces of felt affixed to the bottom of the base.
